You’ve just typed the article of your life. You feel overcome with victory, you feel like a total boss, but then…your computer freezes. You haven’t saved your work so you’re throwing 4 letter words at that hapless little machine and considering putting a mallet to your screen, but don’t do that just yet lol. Short of doing a hard restart (the power button which I DON’T recommend), there are a few alternatives that I’ll be sharing here.
Your first plan of attack should be to keep pressing NUM LOCK key until your Operating system is back to its normal cheerful state. This relieves the processor of any busy processes that are slowing it down.
If that fails, then hit the CTRL-ALT-DELETE keys. This brings up the trusty windows task manager, click on any programs that you don’t need and then click END TASK. You will see that all programs on your taskbar start closing one by one. If that works, then save!
TIP: If you’re working on a MS Office application, it will automatically save your file in case the program suddenly shuts down.
TIP: Always save your file at least every 5 minutes, by just simply clicking on the “disk icon”, it’s just one click!)
There are lots of other simple ways to prevent your computer from freezing:
- Clean your history at least once a week. Go to tools>internet options>clear history
- Delete all internet temporary files. Go to tools>internet options>delete files (don’t forget the offline content!).
- Delete cookies tools. Go to internet options>delete cookies.
- Remove unnecessary programs that you no longer use, they just sit like relics and use up space and Ram! Go to control panel>add/remove programs.
- Do defragmentation at least once a month if you’re constantly downloading and installing/uninstalling software. If not, then do it once every 3 months. To do so, simply go to My Computer and right click your C (local)drive, then click properties>tools>defragment.
- Check your drive’s volume for errors To do so, simply go to My Computer and right click your C (local)drive, then click properties>tools>check this drive for errors.
If that didn’t solve your problem, are there many users logged on that computer? If so, go to your Start menu and log off that user. Remember, it’s best to have only one user logged on at any given time. if there are many users, make sure the last user logs off after using the computer, rather than keeping it logged on and just switching users. Switching users is good as long as you don’t keep all users logged on, as all the applications and programs they were using are still in the memory dumps, just waiting to freeze your PC.
The reason the computer freezes is because if there are too many open programs and applications, these take space in your memory, so if it is too much for the memory to handle, it freezes! Another reason that causes the computer freeze is because you are connected to the internet via dial up, and you are running too many applications and opening too many webpages. So my suggestion is, if you are a heavy internet user, gamer, or love watching movies on your PC, then you are better off with a higher memory (remember Windows 7 needs min 2 GB Ram for optimal performance!!!). And lastly, always shut down your PC properly (do NOT use the power button when turning it off!). Cheers, Sam
